The latest Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion, Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest, arrives on November 11, 2022, but you can visit your local game store to start playing with it early! Starting October 28, 2022, select retailers will begin selling the Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest Build & Battle Box, giving fans a chance to have a Prerelease battle and experience the latest expansion before its official release date.
The Prerelease format allows players to compete with a 40-card deck, with four Prize cards set aside at the start of play, as opposed to a 60-card deck with six Prize cards. This format is perfect, not only for introducing new players to the exciting world of the Pokémon TCG with quick, fun games. It also gives seasoned players a window into all that Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest has to offer. With a limited card pool and the variance of cards that can be acquired in a Prerelease Kit, Prerelease events are also a great opportunity to flex your creative deck-building skills.
Each Build & Battle Box includes four Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest booster packs and a 40-card ready-to-play deck featuring key cards from current and prior sets, as well as one of four unique foil promo cards to boost your Prerelease deck. Depending on which promo card you get, you could add the powerfully bright Sunflora, red-hot Rapidash, elegant Kirlia, or ancient Archeops to your Prerelease deck and collection. Whichever promo you end up with will certainly shape your Prerelease strategy!
Sunflora (SWSH269)
Rapidash (SWSH270)
Kirlia (SWSH271)
If consistency is key in the Pokémon TCG (and it is), Kirlia is certain to aid any player on their way to victory. Kirlia isn’t exactly a hard hitter, though, with its Slap attack only doing 30 damage. However, its Refinement Ability churns through the deck with ease in the Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest Prerelease format. By discarding a card from your hand each turn, you’ll be able to draw 2 cards and increase the odds of finding key pieces to a winning strategy. It can be difficult to find the cards you need with a low Supporter and Item count—which is common in Prerelease formats—but Kirlia might be all you need to refine your win condition. You may even be able to evolve it into Gardevoir, which has the same Refinement Ability and does 120 damage for 2 Energy with its Magical Shot attack, making the Evolution line a strong choice for both consistency and damage output.
Archeops (SWSH272)
The First Bird Pokémon, Archeops, is one of the strongest cards in Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest and is able to swing Prerelease battles in your favor. Its Primal Turbo Ability allows you to search your deck for up to 2 Special Energy cards and attach them to 1 of your Pokémon. In the Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest Prerelease format, you’ll be able to accelerate Regenerative Energy and V Guard Energy to Pokémon with Colorless attack costs like Sunflora. Archeops’s own Speed Wing attack does a strong 120 damage for 3 Colorless Energy, and while it would usually be difficult to power up, attaching Energy from your hand and using Primal Turbo fulfills the Energy cost in a single turn.
There are variations between Build & Battle Boxes, so you can add your own creative twist when building your deck. Whether you’re heading to a local game store or just playing with a friend, have some quick and fun battles using cards from the new Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest expansion!
